Why Business Owners Don't Have Time for Marketing

If you've ever wondered why business owners don't have time for marketing, think about how most workdays actually go.

You start the morning with a plan.

Then someone calls off.

A customer needs something.

An estimate has to go out.

Something breaks.

An employee needs an answer.

And that marketing task you were definitely going to get to today?

Tomorrow.

I've seen this happen over and over again. It's not that business owners don't care about marketing.

They're busy running the business.

Marketing has a nasty habit of being important without being urgent.

If a customer calls, you answer.

If an employee has a problem, you deal with it.

If you have a job scheduled, you show up.

Nobody is going to call you at 3 PM and remind you that you haven't uploaded new job photos to Google in three weeks.

So it gets pushed off.

Then tomorrow gets busy too.

Before you know it, you haven't asked a customer for a review in two months. Your Google Business Profile hasn't been touched. Your website still has information you've been meaning to change since spring.

Meanwhile, none of that means you're doing a bad job running your business.

It actually explains why business owners don't have time for marketing in the first place.

There are only so many hours in the day, and the things happening right in front of you are always going to win.

I don't think the answer is telling business owners they need to "make more time for marketing."

You don't need another thing on your calendar.

You need fewer things on it.

There's work in your business that actually needs you.

Leading your employees.

Taking care of customers.

Closing the big job.

Making the decisions that determine where the company goes next.

Then there's work that simply needs to get done.

Your Google Business Profile needs to stay active.

Reviews need responses.

New photos need to go up.

Your website needs to stay current.

Your Google presence needs consistent attention.

All of that matters.

But none of it requires the owner of the company to personally sit there doing it.

That's the part of outsourcing marketing I think gets overlooked.

Yes, you're paying someone to help your business get found.

Hopefully that turns into more calls and more customers.

But you're buying something else too.

You're buying your time back.

Marketing becomes someone else's responsibility.

It keeps moving even when you're slammed.

And when you finally get home after a long day, updating your Google profile isn't another thing sitting in the back of your mind.

So if you've been wondering why business owners don't have time for marketing, maybe the solution isn't finding another hour in the day.

Maybe it's deciding that your hour is worth more somewhere else.

If you're ready to get marketing off your plate, let's talk. We'll worry about Google while you run the business.
