When Should a Business Owner Outsource Marketing?

I don't think the answer is when you finally get too busy to handle it.

By then, you've probably waited too long.

Most business owners start out doing nearly everything themselves because they have to.

You answer the phone.

You send the invoices.

You handle sales.

You manage the website.

You post on social media.

You update Google.

When money is tight and you're building something from scratch, that makes sense.

But eventually something changes.

The business grows.

Your responsibilities grow with it.

And somehow, you're still doing all the same little things you were doing when the company was half its current size.

That's where "I'll just do it myself" starts getting expensive.

Not necessarily because you're doing a bad job.

Because you're spending owner level time on work that doesn't require the owner.

I talked about this earlier this week, and I think the distinction is important.

There are things that need to get done.

Then there are things that need you.

Those are not the same thing.

Marketing absolutely needs to get done.

Someone needs to make sure your Google presence stays current.

Someone needs to keep an eye on reviews.

Someone needs to make sure your website isn't collecting dust.

Someone needs to pay attention to whether customers can actually find you.

But that someone doesn't necessarily need to be you.

So when should a business owner outsource marketing?

I'd say when doing it yourself starts stealing time from things only you can do.

If you have estimates sitting unanswered while you're messing with your website, that's a problem.

If your employees need more leadership but you're trying to figure out Google rankings, that's a problem.

If you're doing marketing at 9 PM because it's the only time you can squeeze it in, that's probably a sign too.

And if marketing simply isn't getting done because you're too busy, that's an even bigger one.

Outsourcing doesn't mean you stop caring about your marketing.

It means you stop being the person responsible for every little piece of it.

You still know what's happening.

You still know whether it's producing business.

You just don't have to spend your Wednesday afternoon making it happen.

That's what I think gets missed when people look at the price of hiring someone.

You're not only asking, "Can they help me get more customers?"

You're also asking, "What can I do with the time they're giving back to me?"

That's why when should a business owner outsource marketing isn't really determined by the size of the company.

It's determined by the value of the owner's time.

If your time would be better spent selling, leading, serving customers, or just getting home at a decent hour, marketing might be something worth taking off your plate.

If you're at that point, let's talk. We'll handle your Google presence while you handle the parts of the business that actually need you.
